DALTON, Georgia (WDEF) – The city council of Dalton declared a state of emergency in tonight’s meeting over rising Covid cases.

The Mayor’s declaration allows fire and police to provide personnel to assist Hamilton Medical Center. People with EMT training will help in the hospital and others will help with stocking and handling supplies.

The hospital reported 63 Covid cases this afternoon, with 12 in the ICU and 8 on ventilators.

City administrator Andrew Parker reported that state health officials say there have been at least 700 new Covid infections in the county over the last two weeks.

The Council also voted 3-0 in favor of reinstating the mask mandate inside city owned buildings, like City Hall.
