Dalton Plays on ESPN2 Thursday Night Against Harrison and Their Star Quarterback Justin Fields
Dalton, GA-(WDEF) Dalton high school gets to share the football spotlight with the NFL and college football Thursday night because their game will also be on national television.
The Catamounts road game at Harrison on Thursday will be televised on ESPN 2 at 7:30.
The game attracted network coverage because it will feature the top recruit in America in Harrison quarterback Justin Fields, who has verbally committed to Georgia.
The hype around Dalton’s ESPN Game is greater than the hype around a school snow day.
Said quarterback J.P. Tighe:”Plenty of them (students) have asked us, are we going to have to come to school on Friday? I said yeah, you’ll have to come to school on Friday. They say all right, we’ll just watch it on TV then.”
Said head coach Matt Land:”A nationally televised audience. In fact a friend of mine that lives in California sent me a text. He said can’t wait to see the Cats play. It has been about twenty years since I’ve been in Dalton.”
The game spotilight will shine heavily on Justin Fields, and the Catamounts say it’s well deserved.
Said defensive back Grant Goldberg:”He’s just on another level. He’s an insane athlete.”
Said Land:”I’ve seen him in at least two or three games this year. Close games. Games that are kind of just right there, and it’s kind of like okay, I’m through playing. He’s a man among boys. I get asked the comparison between he and (Cartersville’s) Trevor Lawrence a lot. We’ve played only Cartersville in the summer. I always make this comparison. Trevor Lawrence will probably play first on Sundays, but Justin Fields will play first on Saturdays.”
Fields is the real deal, but Dalton beat Harrison last year 31-14.
Said Goldberg:”You’ve got to respect his talent and everything that he brings to the table. It proves that their team is beatable.”
Since Fields is a Georgia commit, who will Dalton Dawgs fans be rooting for?
Said Tighe:”We’ve got a few of them on our team that are saying, we are not his friend until after Thursday night, so we’re looking forward to that. Yeah, there are plenty of Georgia fans around here.”
Said Land:”A friend of mine sent me a tweet the other day. Fans sent all of the alumni to show up and support their new commitment Justin Fields. But what was great about it, told them to all wear red. And we agree. They need to wear as much red as they can. I will tell our guys those are Dalton fans. Those aren’t Georgia fans. Those are Dalton fans.”
