County officers have to buy their own service weapon in DeKalb county, these will provide a little extra security.
Sheriff Jimmy Harris changed the policy in his county..and ordered all certified officers to carry the separate weapon.
Then, he went out and bought them.
SHERIFF JIMMY HARRIS "We got 55 of them…we got them for ..they probably don’t want us to tell..we got them for 320 dollars a piece."
Those Glock 43’s usually cost about 480 dollars a piece.
They work well as an extra weapon because they are small. Officers can carry them in a pocket.
SHERIFF HARRIS "You can see there’s not much ..you know there’s not much that you can see. Yeah, you can’t tell much about it."
Harris paid about 18-thousand dollars for the guns.
SHERIFF JIMMY HARRIS "What we did ..that we paid for them out of our pistol permit fund …we’re trying to reimburse that."
What do citizens think about that policy of officers carrying extra firepower?
PASTOR CHRIS ANDREWS, CROSSVILLE, AL "These sheriff’s officers and employees..they’re our church members , they go to our football games, they’re at our school functions..and so anything that they can do to help better protect our community…I’m in favor of it."
SHERIFF JIMMY HARRIS , DEKALB COUNTY, AL "Think its time that everybody considers training and arming themselves."
Sheriff Harris says he’s getting contributions from all over the country to pay the cost of the new weapons and ammunition.
He says they range from 20-dollars to about 300, and the county is happy to get every dollars.
