CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The state of the mental health of Hamilton County teenagers was discussed at this month’s Hamilton County Regional Health Council meeting.
According to a report from Dr. Gabby Jordan of the McNabb Center, the rate of depression among high school students in Hamilton County has risen by 47 percent since 2019.
She said at least two students in the county had died by suicide in the past year.
Dr. Jordan says a combination of social media, peer pressure, and other factors are contributing to the rise.
She says there are signs parents and educators can monitor for potential issues.
Dr. Jordan said, “If you notice anything off, anything different whether it’s irritability, sleeping a lot, not hanging out with friends, not wanting to go to parties or extracurricular activities, take them seriously. If they’re highly irritable with you, highly disrespectful, take them seriously. Get them some help.”
If you are having suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Hotline at 988 immediately for help.
