New grave maker for deputy killed 57 years ago in the line of duty
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office unveils a new grave marker for a deputy who was killed in the line of duty 57 years ago.
Deputy Charles Garfield was killed after being hit on his motorcycle by a drunk driver while on patrol in Hixson.
57 years later, Dr. Hal McAlister from Decatur, Georgia was visiting a family grave at White Oak Cemetery in 2016.
He noticed a marker with a badge on it for Deputy Garfield.
A year later he returned, and noticed that the grave marker was damaged.
He got the ball rolling that ended with the unveiling on Thursday.
Garfield was 24 years old when he died in the line of duty.
