Dollywood cancels fireworks shows because of dry conditions

Merry and Bright shows called off for rest of the holiday season

PIGEON FORGE, Tennessee (WDEF) – Apparently, the Knoxville area has not been as wet as we have been this week.

Dollywood has decided to cancel their Merry and Bright fireworks show for the rest of the year, due to dry conditions.

They had already been forced to cancel the shows twice in November.

Our Meteorologist Austen Onek tells us that both Townsend and Gatlinburg have seen less rain in the last month and a half than we have.

The fireworks shows happened on Friday and Saturday nights through the holiday season.

“Due to an extended period of drought conditions the last few months, Dollywood – in partnership with the Pigeon Forge Fire Department – has made the decision to discontinue the Merry and Bright firework show for the remainder of the 2022 season. Officials are working diligently with PFFD and the Tennessee Department of Forestry to improve launch site conditions for safe and enjoyable fireworks experiences in the future.”

Of course, the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge region is sensitive about wildfire dangers this time of year.

They just marked the 6th anniversary of the Gatlinburg fires that killed 14 people.
