Dr. Piercey on Omicron variant in Tennessee

NASHVILLE (WDEF) – The Omicron variant of Covid-19 is getting closer to Tennessee (two border states so far), but isn’t here yet, as far as health officials know. Health Commissioner Dr. Lisa Piercey talked today about Covid now in Tennessee and the new variant headed our way.

First, she says there is a slight rise in both cases and hospitalizations from Covid-19 across the state, but that is not, necessarily, the sign of a new spike.

“When you’re at this state, you don’t really know (yet).”

She did note there is a cluster of new hospitalizations in northeast Tennessee right now. But it is not believed to be from the Omicron variant to their knowledge. And they are not worried about the cluster at this point.

Dr. Piercey does say it is just a matter of time until the new variant arrives here, probably in the next few weeks. She says there is a lot of speculation about it right now.

Is it more transmissible than the Delta variant? Is it milder than the Delta variant?

Dr. Piercey says those are just speculations so far.  They hope to learn more in the next several week.
