Drowning at Haig Mill Lake Park in Dalton

DALTON, GA. (WDEF) —  The body of a kayaker has been recovered at Haig Mill Lake Park after reports of a drowning.

The call came in at 7:02 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2024.

A 26-year-old male and his brother in law were kayaking on the water.  The male had taken his life jacket off as they were nearing the dock.

For unknown reasons, the male swam out into the lake.  He became tired and was calling for help.  Eventually, the 26-year-old went under the surface of the water.

The Dalton Fire and Police Departments responded, along with Gordon County Fire Rescue.

There was no sign of the victim when they arrived.

We received a report around 11:45 p.m. Saturday night that the body had been recovered with the assistance of the Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia State Patrol’s diver .

The identity of the kayaker has yet to be released.
