NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – A coalition announces a new ad and campaign to ratchet up pressure for new gun laws in Tennessee before the upcoming special session.
Governor Lee is expected to announce the dates for a special session for later this month in the next day or two.
The topic would be dealing with public safety after the Covenant School shooting in Nashville.
But there is a wide range of what kind of action, if any, that lawmakers will take.
Democrats are pushing for the Governor and Republicans to implement new restrictions on guns.
The Governor, himself, has proposed a new protective order that would give police more power to take guns from citizens who threaten harm to themselves or others.
But leaders in his own party say that’s a non-starter, and that they will not consider any new gun laws.
On Tuesday, the group “Our Kids Deserve Better” released a campaign for what they call common-sense gun laws.
It is a partisan attack against the Republican super-majority and Governor Lee.
Democrat John Ray Clemmons of Nashville says “We hear Tennessee families loud and clear, and we agree 100% that our kids deserve better than what they’ve been getting from Bill Lee and his super-majority.”
The Tennessee Firearms Association is a group with a totally different view on the special session.
They have consistently backed gun rights in the state and are dead set against “Red Flag laws” that allow the government to flag potentially threatening gun owners.
They say the Governor’s protective order proposal is just that, even though he refuses to use the term “Red Flag.”
The Association is supporting Republican lawmakers who are pressuring the Governor to call off his special session with a flurry of ads of their own.
