East Lake Academy boys’ basketball team talks about their recent accomplishments

East Lake Academy, district boys’ basketball champions, join News 12’s Amelia Greer to talk about their latest accomplishment for their school.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The East Lake Academy Boys’ Basketball Team became district champions this year and made their way to the regional semi-finals in Knoxville, a major accomplishment for them and their school.

Winning the championship was a significant win for East Lake Academy after being defeated by Chattanooga Prep three years in a row, according to the team. The team has been working hard since they were in sixth grade to reach the semi-finals game, coming up one game short last year. After a lot of hard work and practice, they made it to the semi-finals this year.

While they lost the semi-finals by two points, the team learned the valuable lesson to keep their head up and persevere. Coach Shanika Freeman says “It was great to see them not give up. For two years, we saw how they could get defeated so early on in the game… This season, it didn’t happen… Even in the championship game for the district, they wanted it and even when we were down by five, six, seven points, they just kept pushing through and they kept coming back. Seeing them overcome the mindset of defeat is the biggest lesson.”

Everyone at News 12 congratulates East Lake Academy for their accomplishment!
