East Ridge City Manager Resigns

East Ridge, TN (WDEF) – It certainly hasn’t been a quiet year at East Ridge City Hall.

City Manager Andrew Hyatt announced his plans to resign at a City Council meeting Tuesday night.

"The worst kept secret in East Ridge has been my job hunt the last few weeks," said Hyatt to a full room.

Hyatt announced officially that he is stepping down as City Manager to take on the City Manager position in Neptune Beach, Florida.

His term was not free of controversy as the development of a Bass Pro Shop that could bring in millions of dollars to the city hit some snags when the city was faced with a $6,000 fee for building on fire hall property.

"I really don’t think it played a role," said East Ridge Mayor Brent Lambert regarding Hyatt’s resignation during Bass Pro Shop negotiations. "It just happened the timing just worked out that one happened, and then the other happened."

Hyatt assumed his position in October of 2013 but before that, East Ridge went through a slew of Interim City Managers.

The mayor says even with the Bass Pro Shop controversy and decision to take one million dollars from the city’s reserve savings to pay for the development, Hyatt’s service was valuable.

"He stepped in at a pretty challenging time as six months after he started we started the whole Bass Pro Shops negotiation," said Lambert. "And so he has been here to oversee a significant step forward in implementing the border region legislation that East Ridge is fortunate to have access to."

The Deputy City Manager will fulfill the duties until a full-time City Manager is found.

City Treasurer Thad Jablonski held that position until City Council appointed Fire Chief Mike Williams as Deputy City Manager.

A City Manager’s job is to basically oversee the day to day operations of the city.

They coordinate the city’s efforts, handle personnel issues, and implement the policies set by the City Council.
