East Ridge Officials Say No Reason For Asbestos Pollution Concerns As Springvale Rd Home Gets Torn Down

EAST RIDGE, TN, (WDEF)-Within the next few weeks 1507 Springvale road will be completely torn down and become a parking lot for a nearby local auto shop.

Some Springvale Road residents tell us they are concerned about the demolition of the property and the possible threat of asbestos, but both the owner and crews say there is no reason for alarm and they are following every protocol possible.

Angel Fine, Property Owner,"It has aluminium siding and wood structure. We talked with the city of East Ridge and got permits pulled to demo it."

East Ridge officials sent News 12 the following statement.

"A demo permit was obtained from the City of East Ridge Codes Division for the property located at 1507 Springvale Road. However single family dwelling demolitions are not required to obtain a permit from Hamilton County Air Pollution Control for asbestos due to the limited possibility of exposure."

Crews say they examined the house thoroughly and are confident asbestos pollution is not a concern.

Gerald Blevins, "Duct-O-Wire any kind of product in the house that was abnormal would lead us to believe it was asbestos."

The home has not been rented out since 2009 and owners say it was falling down.

The crew supervisor says he is unsure of when the house was built, but believes it is more than 50 years old.
