East Side Schoolyard Project Completed
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Community leaders gathered Tuesday morning at East Side Elementary School for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the East Side Community Schoolyard.
The project marks the completion of an over year and a half effort led by Trust for Public Land in partnership with Hamilton County Schools, Hamilton Parks and Recreation, Impact Parks, and the City of Chattanooga.
Organizers say the project received support through both public and private investments, working to expand access to outdoor learning and green space in school communities.
The redesigned campus includes more than fifty new trees, updated playground structures, and a turf soccer field.
The field will also support youth programming through the Chattanooga Football Club Foundation’s Operation Get Active initiative.
Trust for Public Land says the new schoolyard will serve more than 3400 residents living within a 10-minute walk of the school.
Students, families, and neighbors contributed input during the planning process through workshops, presentations, and public meetings.
Trust for Public Land says its Community Schoolyards program works to transform underused school grounds into shared spaces that support education, recreation, and neighborhood access to the outdoors.
