East Tennessee fire update from Dept. of Agriculture

NASHVILLE (WDEF) – The Tennessee Department of Agriculture Forestry Division gives us a look at the big picture for wildfires in our region.

Here is the breakdown now:

The division responded to 18 new fires for 870 acres over the past 24 hour period.
o Cumberland District – 7 fires for 206 acres; two addition fires reported last
night were no action fires
o East Tennessee District – 8 fires for 339 acres; 5 arson, 1 debris barrel fire, 2
structure fires; Mountain View Rd. fire (Hawkins Co) included rescue of
multiple individuals, two division personnel injuries were reported as a result
of that rescue, both were checked out at local hospital and released. They are
expected to be back on fire line in next couple of days.

o A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE TENNESSEE VALLEY AND SOUTHERN
APPALACHIANS EARLY TODAY WITH A CHANCE OF SHOWERS. ONLY MINOR
RAINFALL AMOUNTS ARE ANTICIPATED. AFTER THE FRONT EXITS THE REGION
EXPECT DRY CONDITIONS TO RETURN…AND TEMPERATURES TO COOL TO
AROUND SEASONAL NORMALS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK.

• Safe Debris Burning Permits are not expected to be issued statewide until
substantial precipitation is received.
