Ex-corrections officer accused of conspiring to harm inmate

NEWPORT, Tenn. (AP) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations says a former corrections officer has been charged with conspiring to harm an inmate. The TBI alleges that 24-year-old Joseph Tyree conspired to have a male inmate assaulted while Tyree was serving as a Cocke County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer.

The TBI says the request was carried out on Dec. 3, 2020, by several inmates, causing bodily harm to the victim.

A Cocke County grand jury indicted Tyree last week on charges of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, official misconduct and official oppression. It’s not clear whether he is represented by a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
