Extreme Makeover Planned for Camp Joy in Hamilton County

A local camp that provides children with a week of summer activities in a Christian atmosphere will soon undergo a massive makeover.

$3 million dollars will be spent to breath new life into Camp Joy off Hunter Road in Harrison.

The camp suffered major damage in the March tornado, but builders hope to get it reopened in time for summer.

Five-thousand volunteers will be needed to rebuild cottages, renovate the dining hall and tabernacle, and build new features like a splash park and human foosball court.  Camp attendee and counselor Ace Stafford says "it impacts my life because I can see the change that occurs after the children come and take part in the summer activitites and everything.  There’s nothing greater.  There’s nothing I seek.  That’s so rewarding, far more than money."

The extreme camp makeover begins in early June with a reveal scheduled for July 4th.

The late Lee Roberson, the founder of Tennessee Temple University, started Camp Joy back in 1946.
