Family Reacts to New Luther Masingill Scholarship
Jerry Summers, with Central’s Alumni Association, says, "Luther didn’t have much hair on his head, but if he did it would probably be gold, the color of Central."
Central High School was his alma mater.
He graduated in 1941 and supported the school until the day he died, October 20th, 2014.
Summers adds, "The Friday, the 17th, before he passed on the 20th, I sent him a PSA and he was still trying to help Central."
Shortly after Luther’s passing, several member’s of Central’s alumni association came up with a special way to honor Luther through a scholarship.
Yanett Torres, a senior at Central High School, says, "We don’t have lots of money and so this would help me pay for college."
Some of you may not know this, but Luther helped students fund their education long before this scholarship.
Jeff Masingill, Luther’s son, says, "He never told us. He just did it because he wanted to do it and it needed to be done. Something needed to be done at that particular time and he would just take care of things."
Qualifying seniors will need at least a "B" average, an interest in pursuing a career in communications, good character, and financial need.
Savannah Smith, a sophomore at Central, adds, "It just makes me work harder as a person and with my writing, so maybe once I am a senior, I can get that scholarship."
The Board of Directors of the Central High Alumni Supporters Association will pick the scholarship winner every year.
In the end, it’s questionable as to who would be honored more … the scholarship winner or Luther?
Jeff Masingill adds, "We could have the next Luther right here in Central High School."
This is one out of 11 scholarships offered at Central High School.
The first Luther Masingill scholarship will be handed out at the end of this school year.
