FDA approved nasal vaccine for home use
HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF)- With Cold Weather quickly approaching, The Food and Drug Administration finally approved FluMist to be used at Home.
“The difference is they’re basically approving it for self-use. so you do not have to go to a healthcare provider to be able to be able to administer that. They would send it to you, and you would just administer yourself,” said Dr. Phillip Smith, Pharmacist with Access Pharmacy,
FluMist has been used by Local pharmacies for several years.
Dr. Smith says folks will soon be available to order the vaccine directly from online.
“You know, I think what they’re trying to do is increase vaccination rates for flu. said Dr. Smith. “Typically, it hovers around 50% of adults and kids into getting the flu shot.”
Dr. Smith believes the at home vaccine will be available and administered to both children and adults ages 2 to 49.
“So over 49 you are recommended to get the Flu Shot. Under two as well. But, two to 49, they can use the nose spray,: said Dr. Smith.
The FDA says folks will still be required to get a prescription for the vaccine.
Dr. Smith is hopeful that folks are vaccinated ahead of the flu season.
“if people know that there is a nose spray available. I am interested to see how many more people are going to get the flu shot. Does it increase your vaccination rates 50%? I’m hopeful, but we will have to wait and see,” Dr. Smith concluded.
