Firefighters monitor blaze at Walker County Landfill
CHICKAMAUGA, Georgia (WDEF) – The fire is under control, but it will be a late night for some fire watchers.
The blaze happened at the Walker County Landfill west of Chickamauga around 3:30 PM.
County officials describe it as the size of two basketball courts.
Crews were able to use nearby dirt to knock it down.
But smoked billowed through Chattanooga Valley for several hours.
The fire was across a field from the Walker County Animal Shelter, but the smoke was blowing the other way.
After dumping 3,000 gallons of water on the fire, crews built a berm around it and cleared any potential burning material.
They will remain on site all night to keep a watch on it.
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division has been advised.
The Walker County Landfill handles construction and demolition waste, like lumber, tile and brick.
