Flu Activity on the Rise Across the Tennessee Valley as Hospitals Prepare for Busy Winter

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF)-Flu activity is increasing across the Tennessee Valley, with local hospitals preparing for a particularly busy winter season.

Erlanger Health System reports a rise in patients showing flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. Health officials warn that the flu spreads easily through respiratory droplets, especially in schools, workplaces, and crowded indoor spaces during the colder months.

Jeffrey Bennett, Chief of General Pediatrics at Erlanger, explains that multiple strains of the flu are contributing to the increase. “We’ve had a mix actually, a flu A and flu B in our community, so that may be part of the reason why folks feel like it’s a little more intense. It’s not just one strain that’s circulating right now — we have at least two circulating right now in our community,” Bennett said.

Officials emphasize that frequent handwashing, staying home when sick, and knowing when to seek medical care are key steps to help slow the spread of the virus. Vaccination remains the most effective tool to prevent severe illness and protect vulnerable populations.

Residents are encouraged to monitor symptoms closely and take precautions, especially during this peak flu season.
