Flu cases on the rise ahead of school resuming

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As the days get colder and children prepare to go back to school, health experts are seeing flu cases continue to rise in Tennessee.

“We are not surprised to see a rise in not only flu, but flu-like illnesses,” said Dr. Stephen Miller, Health Officer for the Hamilton County Health Department. “It is so much so, that it has been higher this year than for the last two years, as far as influenza goes.”

According to the CDC, Hamilton County flu-like illness rates are up 13%. Dr. Miller says parents need to keep a close watch on children with symptoms.

“If they are running a fever, especially around 101, 102… if they are complaining of a dry cough, body aches, chills… or any of the signs and symptoms that could be the flu at work,” Dr. Miller said.

But flu is not the only serious concern.

“We also know that RSV is on the rise and unfortunately, we are still at high levels of COVID,” Dr. Miller said. “So, now more than ever, we need to be observant of those around us that are at risk for serious complications.”

Since children will head back to school from the holiday break soon, Dr. Miller advises parents to vaccinate their children.

And remember, if your child is sick, keep them home.

“Not only for their own children’s sake, but also to think about other classmates and who they are going home to. If your child is exhibiting any of the signs and symptoms of the flu, they need to stay home,” Dr. Miller concluded.
