Fork Ridge Fire Ignites in Big Frog Wilderness
The Fork Ridge Fire, which was first detected last Friday in the Big Frog Wilderness of Polk County, has prompted an official closure for safety and firefighting operations.
The blaze, which impacted Trail 69 and part of the Benton MacKaye Trail, was estimated to have burned around 45 acres.
“Conditions are very dry, as everyone around here probably knows. We’ve had a dry summer with minimal moisture. Some cloudy conditions over the weekend, along with higher humidity, helped to keep the fire under control. We are currently monitoring the fire and determining the best course of action,” said Mary Miller, Fire and Natural Resources Staff Officer.
For now, the affected trails and nearby areas will remain closed until further notice.
