Former Mocs Quarterback Alejandro Bennifield Gets Invitation to New Orleans Saints Mini-Camp
(gomocs.com) Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga All-Southern Conference quarterback Alejandro Bennifield has accepted an invitation to mini-camp with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. Bennifield is one of four Mocs invited to upcoming rookie camps and one of nine currently affiliated with a NFL team.
Bennifield was a second team All-SoCon selection as a junior and first-year starter in 2016. He was second in the SoCon and No. 11 in the FCS with 26 passing TDs, second-most in school history. He led UTC to a 9-4 record and a third-straight appearance in the NCAA FCS Playoffs.
He threw four TDs in a game four times and was second in the SoCon and No. 12 in the FCS with a 152.6 pass eff. Rating. An accurate passer, he was also third in the league and No. 10 in the FCS in completion % (64.4%) in 2016.
“Dro is an extremely talented football player with rare arm talent that I know will impress the Saints coaching staff and front office personnel,” stated head coach Tom Arth. “Dro has been through a lot and has overcome great adversity to be in the position he is in now. I know all his experiences at Chattanooga have prepared him well to begin what will hopefully become a successful NFL career.”
Voted team captain for his final season, Bennifield missed the final six games of 2017 after being knocked out in the first quarter against Wester Carolina. He was coming off a six game suspension due to an NCAA academic issue.
Bennifield joins Dale Warren (’17 – Bills), Lucas Webb (’17 – Bills) and Josh Cardiello (’17 – Buccaneers) as the four Mocs with rookie mini-camp tryouts. Five other Chattanooga letter winners are currently under contract with NFL teams, including C.J. Board (’16 – Brown), Keionta Davis (’16 – Patriots), Tae Davis (’17 – Giants), Corey Levin (’16 – Titans), Buster Skrine (’10 – Jets).
