Former South Pittsburg officer charged with assault

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – The police officer accused of beating a South Pittsburg man last fall, has now been charged.

We first told you about the video used against him in October.

Then-police officer Joshua Chance was one of the officers who arrested Gary Michael King at his home on Old Jasper Road.

King told us that he heard dogs barking, saw a laser light shining in his bedroom, so he took a gun out to find the culprit.

“A few minutes later, that’s when the cops showed up, and told me to lay my weapon down. So I laid my weapon down and I turned around and held my hands up and they attacked me, beat me, stomped me, tazered me.”

The arrest was caught on a home security camera.

After seeing the video, D.A. J. Michael Taylor asked the TBI to investigate.

The investigators say Officer Chance assaulted King after he was in custody.

Chance has since been fired from the department.

A Marion County Grand jury has indicted him on charges of Assault, Aggravated Assault and Official Misconduct.

Chance surrendered to the TBI Thursday morning.
