Free tail light replacement event held to prevent “potentially dangerous” police interactions
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Free tail light replacement event held to prevent “potentially dangerous” police interactions
An organization fixed broken tail lights for free inthe community today.
The Chattanooga chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America were set up in a parking lot on East 23rd street near South Hickory Street.
Volunteers fixed the broken tail lights and provided refreshments for those who were getting their cars serviced.
This was the second year they held this program and they explained why they host these events.

Last year, Chattanooga DSA raised over $700 and repaired over 20 tail lights.
The group hopes to expand and improve the program this year and they plan to hold other clinics in August, and October.
“Broken tail lights often result in traffic stops which can be perilous for undocumented immigrants and people of color”, according to Camilo Payan, the Chair of the local chapter. “Not to mention, expensive tickets can be devastating for those suffering from poverty. No one should have to choose between paying their rent or paying a ticket. Chattanooga DSA is committed to solidarity with the working class and oppressed peoples everywhere, and this event is a small part of that effort.”
“I believe direct action and mutual aid are key to improving the lives of our fellow workers, and the best place to start is right in our own communities,” said James Baker, Chattanooga DSA member and co-organizer of the event. “I can’t even imagine what it’s like for folks who also have to worry if they’ll make it out of that interaction with law enforcement alive. These are the people we’re trying to help. Criminal justice reform is important, but marginalized and oppressed groups need our help now.”
Anyone in need of a new tail light should contact Chattanooga DSA at firstname.lastname@example.org with the make and model of their vehicle.
