Frigid Temperatures Grip East Tennessee

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – As winter weather moves in, officials are urging residents to take precautions to stay safe. From protecting your home to dressing for the frigid air, preparation is key.

Temperatures are set to drop well below freezing across East Tennessee, and that means it’s time to prepare for the cold.

The National Weather Service warns that wind chills could make it feel even colder, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Health experts say if you have to go outside, be sure to bundle up in layers, wear a hat and gloves, and limit exposure to the cold as much as possible.

Officials are also urging homeowners to take precautions to protect their pipes. When temperatures drop below freezing, pipes can burst—leading to costly damage.

Experts recommend letting faucets drip and opening cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around any plumbing.

Meanwhile, road crews are preparing for potential ice and snow. The Tennessee Department of Transportation is already treating roads, and drivers are urged to take it slow, especially on bridges and overpasses, which freeze first.

And don’t forget about emergency preparedness… make sure you have blankets, flashlights, and extra supplies in case of power outages.
