From The Archives: 1982 December flooding

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – While we’ve seen a lot of rain this week in our area, it has actually been a fairly dry fall heading into winter.

We’ve seen much worse.

40 years ago, we suffered through a very soggy year.

In 1982, we saw major flooding in August, of all months.

Mountain torrents washed out bridges at Suck Creek and Soddy Daisy.

So officials put up temporary bridges for drivers until the state could rebuild permanent ones.

Then another rash of flooding in December washed those temporary bridges out again.

This is one report from December, 1982 of the destruction.
