From The Archives: 1982 Vols Vs Bama

The Tennessee- Alabama matchup 40 years ago had a lot in common with this year's showdown

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – There have been a lot of colorful moments for fans on the Third Saturday in October.

But we found one old Bama-Vols showdown in our Archives that had some eery similarities to last weekend.

The date was October 17, 1982.

Alabama traveled to Knoxville with a top 5 ranking and national championship hopes.

They had dominated Tennessee for the last 10 years.

But the Vols also were ranked that year and they had high hopes after just beating LSU (another ranked team) in Baton Rouge.

This matchup had several football legends present… coaches Bear Bryant and Johnny Majors. Plus future NFL stars Reggie White and Willie Gault.

In the game, Alabama jumped out to an early lead, Tennessee came back and it only ended when a last second Alabama attempt to tie the game was intercepted.

Afterwards, you may have never seen Johnny Majors so happy.  He told reports with a big grin “Our players can always say I beat Alabama.”
