Funding for Local Food Program Missing from State Budget
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) Tennessee food banks and local farmers are urging lawmakers to bring back funding for the Farm-to-Food Bank program, which helps put fresh, local food on tables while supporting small farms.
The program allows food banks to buy directly from farmers, providing economic stability for farms and nutritious food for families in need. Funding is not included in the state’s proposed budget and could run out by 2026.
Shannon Moore of the Chattanooga Area Food Bank said, “This program has been absolutely vital for strengthening our local food system here.”
Supporters warn that without renewed funding, both farmers and food banks could feel the impact as demand for food assistance continues to rise.
