Gateway Project begins Monday near North Shore

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)-Folks who are traveling through Chattanooga’s North Shore can expect road construction and changes, the next couple of months.

“Today is the start of the construction for the home road manufacturers Gateway project. So the idea is to create better connectivity between essentially highway 27 going all the way to the national archeological district that was created there at Mocasin Bend,” said Justin Strickland, City of Chattanooga Public Works.

The Manufacturers and Hamm Road Gateway Project has been in the works for more than 20 years.

Strickland with Chattanooga’s Public works division explains the process of the road project.

“We are going to take it down from four lanes and one center turn lane to one lane in each direction, and a center turn lane the traffic that is on the road can that can easily handle it. And then Hamm, We are actually adding sidewalks for the entire length, all the way down to Mocasin Bend Road,” said Strickland.

According to the City of Chattanooga, the Gateway Project will be done in multi-phases

Strickland expects the project will take up to 10 months to be completed.

“The good news is we don’t see any major restrictions where any businesses or anyone could be negatively affected by having their access completely blocked. We really see that if it happens, it would be extraordinarily brief,” said Strickland.

Detour signage will be placed on Highway 27 and other critical intersections directing traffic.

And as you are traveling along Manufacturers Road and Hamm Road, Strick;and encourage folks to drive with caution.

“So it will only be eastbound. So unfortunately, you will not be able to travel westbound on Hamm Road from Manufacturers. So that is a little bit of a loop that you will have to endure. But this is the way that we can basically keep, essentially, the road at least partially open for the duration of the process the project,” Strickland concluded.
