Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge getting smoked out on Monday

PIGEON FORGE, Tennessee (WDEF) – Tourist attractions in Pigeon Forge are looking forward to the rains this week.

On Monday, the town at the foot of the Smokies was in a fog, with some reports of ash falling.

The main fire is at the Chimney Tops and Bullhead Ridge and dumping the smoke into the Gatlinburg area.

That fire is now burning 500 acres.

Park officials have closed Newfound Gap Road, Cherokee Orchard Road, Elkmont Road.

The main strip in Gatlinburg, usually crammed with tourists, is mostly empty as smoke and ash descends on the town. People here are paying for rain to help control wildfires in the Smoky Mountains.

Many businesses in Downtown Gatlinburg are starting to close to keep folks safe from the poor air quality. Rain is expected today and we are praying for the mountains, the people, and all the emergency workers 😢🐻💛
