GBI phone number spoofed

Decatur, GA (WDEF) – Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are warning people about a phone scam alert.

They say the GBI’s main line number 404-244-2600 has been compromised by phone spoofing.

GBI officials have been dealing with it for a month now.

They say when a number is spoofed, it can be used to show up on a Caller ID as a valid number.

Officials say the scammer has been calling people using their number and claiming to be with the GBI.

The scammer says they’re collecting a debt with the IRS or for college.

The victim is told if they don’t pay a fine, then there will be a warrant out for their arrest.

This is a scam!

Officials say the GBI does not contact people for debt collection.

They say for people not to do business over the phone with anyone claiming to be with the GBI if you did not call them.

Also, do not give your credit card information out to someone who calls you.
