UPDATE: GBI responding officer involved shooting in Whitfield County

DALTON, Georgia (WDEF) – UPDATE: The GBI was called in to investigate a deadly officer involved shooting in Whitfield County.

According to preliminary information, at around 4:30 Friday afternoon 911 got several calls about a man in the middle of Abutment Road.

They said he was yelling at cars and people at businesses.

When a deputy got on the scene, authorities said the officer gave verbal commands, but the man did not comply.

Investigators said the man then turned and attempted to draw a weapon from his waist.

He still did not comply to verbal commands and again tried to draw his weapon.

Authorities said the deputy fired several gunshots hitting the man.

He died on scene.

No officers were hurt.

A person in the area Friday night told News 12 that the incident happened toward the south section of Abutment Road.

The Dalton Daily Citizen reports that both Dalton Police and Whitfield County deputies responded to the scene.

The incident is still under investigation.

This is the 71st Officer Involved Shooting that the GBI has investigated so far in 2019.
