Georgia Looks For Much Needed Win Against Florida in ‘River City Showdown’
It appears some of the powers-to-be are trying to rebrand the Georgia-Florida game the ‘River City Showdown’.
They want to move away from the rivalry’s old moniker as the ‘World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party’.
But the Bulldogs really don’t care what the rivalry is called, as long as they get a much needed win.
Georgia-Florida may not get the hype of some other college football rivalries, but the Dawgs and Gators will be jacked for their showdown in Jacksonville.
Said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart:”We’re excited for an opportunity to go down to Jacksonville and play them in what I think is one of the best neutral site games there is in all of college football.”
Said Florida defensive line coach Chris Rumph:”One of the things I remember from last year being my first game is just coming across that bridge man, and you just look out there, and you just see a sea of blue and black. It really gets your blood boiling.”
Said Florida head coach Jim McElwain:”I think what really makes it stand out is the neutral site, and the way the city of Jacksonville rolls out the carpet for both teams.”
The crowd split makes this game unique, but it’s something Coach Smart doesn’t worry about.
Said Smart:”We don’t concern ourselves with what’s outside. We’ve got to concern ourselves with blocking, tackling, running fast, being smart, making good decisions, and having undisciplined penalties.”
Georgia has won only five meetings against Florida since 1998.
Said Dawgs linebacker Davin Bellamy:”Losing that game I guess kind of stings more just because of the history of the two schools. You kind of want to win that game for yourself, the fans, and also your coaches.”
Perhaps the key to the game. Will Georgia be able to run against the Gators, who are second in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 12 points a game.
Said Rumph:”We’re just going to have to do a great job of first all just everybody being gap sound. Playing unselfish ball.”
Said Greg Pyke:”It’s the Georgia-Florida game. They’re going to be juiced up and ready to come out and give us their best shot, and we’re going to do the same. It’s going to be a fist-fight.”
Georgia and Florida kick at 3:30pm Saturday, and the game will be televised on News 12 Now.
