Georgia men sentenced for gun trafficking
ATLANTA, Georgia (WDEF) – Two Georgia men have been sentenced for trafficking firearms that ended up at crime scenes all across the country and Canada.
Federal prosecutors say Alvin Demar paid Joshua Carter and others to buy handguns, at least on paper, around metro Atlanta.
Demar then sold them to others.
Those guns ended up at crime scenes in Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Gainesville Georgia, French Camp California and both Edmonton and Toronto in Canada.
In one case, a Glock pistol was linked to three separate shootings in Atlanta.
In another, a Ruger pistol purchased by Carted ended up in the hands of a convicted felon who fired it 17 times in Gainseville, Georgia.
Demar, who has convictions for drug trafficking and aggravated robbery, bought several handguns for himself, which were illegal for him to have.
He pleaded guilty to the scheme in March and has now been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.
Carter got a term of three years in federal prison.
“Firearm traffickers present an acute and dangerous threat to communities within and outside our district,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan. “The sentencing of these defendants is an example of our office’s unwavering commitment to work with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to identify and dismantle gun trafficking operations, and to prosecute those who jeopardize the wellbeing of our communities by funneling firearms to criminals.”
