Georgia Primary Elections Today

Perdue Kemp

Former Sen. David Perdue and Gov. Brian Kemp, battling today for the Republican Primary for Georgia Governor.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Today is election day for Georgia as voters will be heading to the polls to vote in numerous primaries both at the state and local level. One of the most notable primaries is the battle for the Georgia governorship in the Republican primary. Incumbent Governor Brian Kemp will look to get a step closer to reelection as he faces off against former Senator David Perdue. Both have been intensely critical of each other in their campaigns citing disagreements over voting fraud in the 2020 elections and their ability to defeat the Democratic nominee for governor, Stacey Abrams. Abrams faces no challenger as she gears up for the winner of the GOP primary in what will one of the most watched governor races in the country.

Additionally on the state level, incumbent Senator Rapahel Warnock will wait to see who he faces in the Senate election later this year. According to polling, it is likely he will face Herschel Walker, best known for his time as a star running back for the University of Georgia where he won both a national championship and a Heisman Trophy. This race will go a long way in determining who holds the balance of power in the Senate where right now Democrats hold the majority with a 50/50 split with Vice President Kamala Harris being able to cast decisive votes.

A race to also watch on the state level is the Republican primary for the Secretary of State. Incumbent Brad Raffensperger has faced criticism over his handling of the 2020 election and is facing Rep. Jody Hice, who has the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.

On the local level, national eyes will be watching the Georgia Congressional District 14 primary where Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene faces 5 challengers for the Republican nomination. Amongst these candidates, Dr. Jennifer Strahan has raised the most money since beginning her campaign raking in over $300,000 according to FEC filings.

The winner of that primary will face either Marcus Flowers, Holly McCormack, or Wendy Davis who are competing for the Democratic primary in that district. Flowers is a United States Army veteran who has raised according to FEC filings over $8 million so far in his campaign. McCormack is a local business owner from Ringgold. Davis is a former city councilwoman from Rome, Ga.

There are many local races at both the county and state level as well that will be decided today. Remember that if any election has no winner that reaches a majority of voters, there would be a runoff election held on June 21.

Voting will be open today from 7 AM to 7 PM. Stay tuned to News 12 this evening as results come in throughout the night.
