Georgia teacher charged with sexual battery of a student

69 year old teacher worked at high school in southwest Georgia

HAMILTON, Georgia (WDEF) – After a high school teacher was indicted on a charge of sexual battery of a student, investigators are now reaching out to see if there are other victims at the school.

69 year old James Steel taught construction classes at Harris County High near Columbus.

The GBI says they were asked by local authorities to investigate reports of inappropriate contact with multiple students last May.

The school system immediately removed Steel from teaching, and he is on suspension pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

Steel was charged with one count of sexual battery of a person under 16 years of age.

But officials stress the investigation is ongoing and encouraged anyone with additional information to contact them.
