Gordon Lee Senior Jake Poindexter Brings a Big Pitching Arsenal to the Mound

Chickamauga, GA-(WDEF-TV) Gordon Lee has turned out some top baseball players in recent years, and senior pitcher Jake Poindexter is carrying on that tradition. He has been lights out in helping the Trojans reach the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.

When Jake Poindexter takes the mound, the called third strike echoes through Chickamauga. Poindexter has been fanning batters since he was a freshman.
Said head coach Mike Dunfee:”Whenever we were down at Rockmart, and we played Ty Floyd, who is now at LSU. Whenever Poindexter was a freshman, and Ty was a sophomore. They locked up, and a lot of scouts were there. All the heads start turning. Like who is this kid? The freshman. Who’s this kid?”
Poindexter says he has hit 93 on the gun, and then couple that with a wicked curve.
Said Poindexter:”It’s always a good feeling when you see the knees buckle, and they go back like that. That’s my favorite thing to do. I went, and I got to work on developing a curve ball and change-up for that next year. Then my junior year the slider came along. So now I have a four-pitch mix that I’m very comfortable with.”
Poindexter’s pitching repertoire earned him a scholarship to the University of Georgia.
Reporter:”What did the Georgia coaches. What did they tell you that they liked about you?”
Said Poindexter:”My competitiveness. I’m always going to go out there day in and day out and compete. I feel like I have a great tempo on the mound too. They love how quick I work.”
Yeah, Poindexter likes to get it and go. Just ask his catcher.
Said catcher Brody Cobb:”At the first of the year, it wears me out at the first of the year, but around now, I’m used to how fast he goes. It’s quick.”
Poindexter is in a groove to say the least.
He has thrown back-to-back no hitters in the playoffs.
Said Cobb:”I don’t know of anyone that has done that here. I’m sure he’s the only one that has done that. That’s crazy.”
Said Poindexter:” I was just trying to go out there and get the ‘W’ for the team. It just so happens that I did it in back-to-back games. It’s a good feeling, but in the end, it’s not what matters.”
