Grand Jury indicts suspect shot Sept. 4 by Chattanooga police

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – A man was indicted today in connection with his actions on September 4, 2017 that resulted in him being shot during an altercation with Chattanooga Police Officers in the 5200 block of Central Avenue, Chattanooga, TN.

The Hamilton County Grand Jury handed down indictments on September 28, 2017 charging Casey Jay Smith with the below listed charges.

(2) Counts: Aggravated Assault on Police
(2) Counts: Theft over $10,000 (Auto Theft)
(1) Count: Felony Evading Arrest
(1) Count: Felony Reckless Endangerment
(1) Count: Escape
(1) Count: Driving While Revoked

At approximately 11:00 am, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Division arrested 33-year-old Casey Jay Smith on these charges.

At the time of Smith’s arrest, he was in custody at the Hamilton County Jail being held on the charge of Possession of Methamphetamine (Sell, Delivery or Manufacture).

Smith’s bond has been set at $40,000.

HCSO says the court date is pending and no further information is available at this time.
