Grocery Sales Tax Holiday begins tomorrow in Tennessee
We've got details on what will NOT be tax free
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – One Sales Tax Holiday has just ended in Tennessee, but a bigger one is just about to begin. And this one is a lot longer than the back-to-school holiday.
The state is suspending the sales tax on grocery items for three months, beginning tomorrow on August 1. That takes us through Halloween.
The governor’s office estimates that Tennesseans will save $273 million off their grocery bills.
“In Tennessee, we cut taxes any chance we get because families should keep more of their own hard-earned dollars. Starting Tuesday, we’re inviting Tennesseans to take advantage of savings at the grocery store this August through October,” said Governor Lee. “I thank the General Assembly for partnering to deliver three months of savings for Tennessee taxpayers.”
Here are some of the details on what is not tax free.
- pet food (only food consumed by humans)
- beer (not alcohol)
- cigarettes
- candy
- dietary supplements
- food bars (no prepared food)
- vending machine items
The biggest exception: the tax holiday does not include “micro markets” (convenience stores).
The sales tax rate varies county by county in Tennessee, because local governments can add on.
We will save up to 6.75% off whatever the local rate is (Hamilton County has a 9.75% rate).
“We’re proud to be able to offer three months of tax-free groceries to help hardworking Tennesseans save money,” said Department of Revenue Commissioner David Gerregano.
