Hakeem blasts “Dismantle DEI Act” in House Education Committee
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- A Chattanooga lawmaker had some fiery comments this week regarding proposed legislation that would curb diversity requirements.
Tennessee House Bill 622 would prohibit local governments and schools from basing any hiring decisions to meet any diversity metrics.
Sponsors are calling the bill the “Dismantle DEI Act”, for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Representative Yusuf Hakeem of Chattanooga took exception to what he sees as a regressive piece of legislation.
“There is an effort among some people to turn the clock. Put those folks back where they belong. You can attempt it. I question if you’re going to get there. So I’m saying, that stop acting like you don’t know what this is all about, and deal with the reality of it. You are trying to put black folks back in a box, and I’m saying we’re not going,” said Rep. Hakeem.
This bill is still working through both House and Senate committees.
