Hamilton County Approves McClellan Building Pilot

Hamilton County (WDEF) – The Hamilton county commission followed the lead of the Chattanooga city council and approved a PILOT agreement for developers of the McClellan Building.

Although school taxes would be paid in-full, most property taxes will be frozen for 14 years.

The developers plan to spend 13-million dollars to create 90 apartments in the now-vacant building.

County Commissioner Sabrena Smedley said "I did ask the developer point blank would he move forward with this project without the pilot? And his answer was no. The numbers aren’t feasible. Probably wouldn’t even be able to secure financing for the project."

Approval of that request comes on the heels of criticism of the PILOT program.

Some elected officials want to cut-back on the number of programs they approve.
