Hamilton County Republican and Democratic officials react to travel ban ruling
HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Hamilton County Democratic and Republican leaders reacted to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that upholds President Donald Trump’s Travel Ban on Tuesday.
Hamilton County Republican Party Chairman Marsha Yissick said the ruling is a huge victory for the President and said the party is proud the supreme court ruled in his favor.
“I feel like it will keep America safe and that has been one of his key points is to keep America safe and that is why he started with the travel ban to begin with and that’s what we have to do for our country,” Yissick said.
The Supreme Court voted 5-4.
Hamilton County Democratic Party Chair Khristy Wilkinson said she is disappointed by the decision.
“Because it seems like a ban that is based on religion it reads to me as unconstitutional. So it’s disheartening that this is sort of where we are I think,” Wilkinson said.
The ban puts travel restrictions on people from seven different countries coming to the United States, mainly Muslim countries, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Yemen, and Venezuela.
“There are just a small amount of countries that are included in this travel ban and these are people who do not vet their people before they come into the country, and I think it reinforces the fact that President Trump has the ability and the right to decide who comes into the United States of America and who does not,” Yissicks said.
“I think that this reinforces for the non United States communities that the United States is becoming an intolerant country,” Wilkinson said.
