Hamilton County Sheriff discusses critical jail issues

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Sheriff Jim Hammond told the Pachyderm club today, May 15, that it’s only a matter of time before the county has to build a new one.

On some days the Hamilton County jail has 400 more prisoners than it can house.

Hammond discussed several critical issues in what he calls a “state of the sheriff’s department” speech. But the jail, which he says may cost as much as 100-million dollars, is taking center stage.

“I think you’re going to see in the next few months meetings with the commission..at that point a plan of action will be adopted by the commission, uh, I’ve looked at two or three plans–I’m not at liberty to talk about it because it is the mayor’s situation right now and he has to formerly present it to the commission.”

Sheriff Hammond says another goal is to increase the number of SRO’s at county schools.
