Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office investigating jail death

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) —  The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) is investigating an in-custody death at the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center.

At 6:55 a.m. October 2, 2024, corrections deputies were conducting a security check in the George Housing Unit when they located an unresponsive inmate.

Medical personnel immediately responded to give CPR and life-saving aid.

Inmate Jerry Turner was transported to a local medical facility.

He was later pronounced dead.

HCSO stated they believe Turner’s death was due to natural causes.

The Hamilton County Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

Turner was booked on April 28, 2024, and charged with the following:

  • • Criminal Trespassing
    • Violation of the Sex Offender Registry
    • Aggravated Assault
    • Petition to Revoke for a Violation of Sex Offender Registry
    • Petition to Revoke for Assault

District Attorney Coty Wamp has turned the investigation over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
