Hamilton County unanimously passes 2016-2017 budget

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Hamilton County Commission unanimously passed Mayor Jim Coppinger’s 679.6 million dollar balanced budget Wednesday morning.

Hamilton County Government officials point out this is the sixth consecutive year Mayor Coppinger has been able to balance the budget with no tax increase.

Mayor Coppinger expressed his appreciation to the commission for the support of his fiscally conservative budget, saying, “We continue to fund our operations through growth, I am proud to again present a budget to taxpayers that meets additional government, education and public safety needs through the estimated 2% growth in revenues we anticipate receiving over the next 12 months.”

County officials say the no tax increase-balanced budget was accomplished despite a $5.2 million increase in health insurance costs for the General Fund.

Mayor Coppinger says, “Despite this increase in health insurance costs, we were able to absorb the increase because of our cost control efforts in several areas and larger than anticipated participation of our employees who used our clinic, pharmacy and fitness center.”

The Hamilton County Clinic, Pharmacy and “The Well” fitness center are all initiatives introduced by Mayor Coppinger during his mayoral tenure.
