Health Department urge Flu vaccinations during Winter
HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF)- The Health Department aims to increase flu vaccination rates in Hamilton County during the winter season.
“It is going to be another tough year for the flu. And the good thing is, the strains that we prepared for this year, at least two of them are very much covered by the flu shots that you can still get at your local pharmacy or doctor’s office,” said Dr. Stephen Miller, Health Officer at the Health Department.
Influenza or flu is a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory system that can cause severe illness.
Dr. Miller explains why it is vital to get vaccinated.
“All of us are being exposed at every point to all the different flus, anonymous, RSV and everything out there. So we need to take it upon ourselves to try to prepare and protect ourselves,” said Dr. Miller.
The Health Department found the flu can affect people of all ages.
According to the CDC, young children and people with weak immune systems, can be contagious with the flu for a long time.
Dr. Miller considers getting vaccinated a big priority.
“Certainly almost anyone over the age of six months should consider updating their flu vaccine, even at this point in the game, the vaccine will take effect. It is true, it takes two weeks for it to reach maximum effectiveness, but within just a few days, it is going to start to protect you and your loved ones,” said Dr. Miller.
Symptoms of the Flu can include, fever, cough, sore throat and running nose.
But, Dr. Miller says not only getting the vaccine is important, practicing hand hygiene can also protect you from the flu.
“Be sure to clean all the surfaces and wash your hands, especially after giving hugs and handshakes and just take care of yourself from being mindful of that,” Dr. Miller concluded.
