SUMMERVILLE, Georgia (WDEF) – The owner blames a window heater for a fire Tuesday night fire at a Summerville restaurant.

Henry’s BBQ on Commerce Street was gutted by flames.

An employee told firefighters she was in the kitchen when she heard popping sounds coming from the front.

The entry area was filled with smoke when she went to check it out.

The building has housed a restaurant there for more than 60 years.

It started as Troy’s Drive In, went through several burger versions and eventually Ballenger’s Pizza Deli.

It was a Mexican restaurant before transforming to Henry’s BBQ 20 years ago.

The owners posted this message on their Facebook page:

I don’t really know what to say but first my family would like to thank all our local responders that did everything they could to save our business. We appreciate you all greatly. Unfortunately the building and all equipment is a total loss. Thankfully everyone is safe and no one was injured in the tragedy. The window unit upfront was the diningrooms main source of heat and it started the fire. It was turned on around 5:20 and by 6pm the building was engulfed in flames. We do ask for everyone’s prayers. The building was old and did not have insurance. Again I don’t really know what to say as I just feel kind of empty right now. My family and Julie Barber have worked so hard in that building to provide for our community and to provide an income for our families. I want to thank each and everyone who has supported our business. We are devastated to say the least. We are putting all our trust in the Lord.
