Honors Course Set to Host U.S. Junior Amateur Championship This July

Ooltewah, TN-(WDEF) The Honors Course in Ooltewah has hosted four USGA amateur events since opening in 1983.
And this July, they’ll make it five with the U.S. Junior Amateur.
The nation’s top young golfers will certainly be tested by the course at the foot of White Oak Mountain.
Said Greg Sanfilippo-“If you look back at the history and their mission, the USGA could not have found a better club to partner with to host the United States Junior Amateur Championship.”
Said Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke-“Chattanooga is a world-class city, and we have a world-class golf course right here in this area.”
Said Sanfilippo-“Once they earn their way in, they’ll be faced with a grueling six days of competition. After two days of stroke play, the field will be cut to the top 64 players with the lowest scores. Then the championship will be conducted under a match play format. This Pete Dye Course allows for a thorough examination of shot-making, strategy, course management, golf course set-up flexibility, and even a test of nerves.”
Said Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer-“A lot of people think it’s a junior event. They’re going to play the up tees. No. No, no. This golf course will play about 7,300 yards. A legit 7,300 yards.”
Said course superintendent David Stone-“We switched to champion bermuda grass greens in 2013, and that allows us to maintain a green speed that’s faster than what we had with bent grass.”
Said Rymer-“This is a pinnacle championship. This is a golf course that’s a pinnacle golf course. They’ll appreciate it. They’ll understand it. It’ll scare them a little bit, but the players that at this level that get here, they’ll appreciate it. It will be fun for them.”
The tournament is set to get underway on July 18th.
Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth are the only golfers who have won the U.S. Junior Amateur more than once.
