Howard Students and Parents Protest Fate of Band Director

Chattanooga (WDEF) –  Howard High school students and their parents took to the street in protest.

They’re upset over the suspension of one the school’s most popular faculty members.

Band director Dexter Bell was suspended and escorted out of the school on April 30th.

Students tell News 12 the next day, the principal announced the school band would not be allowed to play in the Armed Forces parade.

It was the first time in decades the band did not take part in the event.

Student and parents demand to know the reason why Bell was placed on leave.

Student Jessica Cummings told us "He got suspended for an unknown reason and every time we ask, nobody wants to tell us."

Parent Keyche Benford added "Children cried because he’s gone and don’t know why."

Bell was a News 12 Golden Apple Award finalist last school year.
